New Zealand packs more world-class mountain bike trails into two islands than just about anywhere on earth — subtropical loam in the north, schist and alpine rock in the south, and a few thousand kilometres of hand-built singletrack in between. Here’s the map. Go ride it.

Why trail building
matters
Trails don’t build themselves. Every berm, every rock garden, every drainage nib on your favourite lap was cut by someone — usually a volunteer with a mattock and a Thursday night to spare, sometimes a professional crew with a 1.7-tonne digger and twenty years of line-craft.
New Zealand’s networks run on that mix: club dig nights, iwi and council partnerships, trust-funded build teams and a handful of world-class contractors whose work you’ve ridden without knowing it. The lift isn’t small — and neither is what it gives back.
